Tenganan Dauh Tukad Village is a remote village located in the Manggis District, Karangasem Regency, Bali Province. This village naturally grew into a tourist attraction, visited by many tourists. It seems to have started since the opening of the car road to the village around the 1980s. Since it became known and visited by many domestic and foreign tourists, many residents have become involved in the tourism sector, such as opening art shops or becoming tourist guides. Having minimal or inadequate English language skills is an obstacle for the community or tour guides in guiding tourists who come, so that small problems often occur in communicating regarding what tourists want to know regarding the unique customs and culture in Tenaganan Dauh Tukad Village. Starting from here, Warmadewa University (Unwar) wants to provide knowledge about language through English language courses that are wrapped in the Community Service (PKM) program. In this PKM, it was chaired by Dra. Ni Nyoman Kertiasih, SS, M.Hum, involving English Literature students, Faculty of Letters, Warmadewa University.
Kertiasih said that initially the village youth also tried to form a kind of village tour guide group that could provide directions and necessary explanations regarding the culture and traditions of the community, in a foreign language (English) as best they could. "They are not educated to be tour guides. These local tour guides also receive service fees if the guest shops at the family shop. This situation has a positive impact on the lives of the community as a whole," he explained on the sidelines of the PKM activity, Saturday (6/19/2021). Kertiasih said, since the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world, tourist visits have been cut off, so people's lives have been in disarray, becoming helpless. Based on the above conditions, activities in the form of PKM are carried out with the intention and aim of exploring and empowering community potential in relation to tourism.
He admitted that the steps taken in this service consisted of two main activities, namely: First, exploring, finding out about the tourism potential of Tenganan Dauh Tukad Village, by going into the field. Second, provide guidance regarding the potential, its empowerment, plus provide short English lessons (courses) to the Tenganan Dauh Tukad Village Guide Group. The real program provided in the PKM directly provides service related to culture-based English teaching, not only given to local tour guides, but also given to Sekaa Teruna in the village. "We hope that after this program is completed, the Tenaganan Dauh Tukad village community will be able to manage the existing village potentials and be able to communicate well and correctly with tourists so that tourists can capture the knowledge and information they want directly from valid sources," concluded Kertiasih.
